RESEARCH DIRECTIONS FOR ENERGY CONSERVATION IN AUSTRALIAN TRANSPORT SYSTEMS. NATIONAL ENERGY RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM CONSULTANCY STUDY REPORT

The principal objective of the study was to develop a Five Year Strategy Statement for the Transport Systems Component of the Transport Subprogramme, which will identify priority areas for future research and more effective technology transfer for energy efficiency systems, all within the objectives set by Government and the NERDDC. Particular objectives were to: 1) review certain projects funded to date under the Programme; 2) identify priority areas for future work; 3) review the effectiveness of technology transfer activities undertaken to date; and 4) identify factors inhibiting technology transfer and recommend more effective approaches. Chapter 2 reviews the studies to date and assesses their effectiveness in terms of the energy savings reported and/or the energy conservation approaches recommended therein. Chapter 3 includes a wide ranging review of the various markets of energy use, and identifies areas of research opportunity. Chapter 4 addresses concerns about technology transfer and suggests a way to handle this problem. Some processes of research management are outlined. Chapter 5 identifies major issues and priorities, prepares a Preliminary Strategy Statement and recommends that it be discussed at a Workshop on Energy Conservation in Transport Systems.
