BASIC DRIVING BEHAVIOUR: AN INTERMEDIATE CRITERION FOR EVALUATING THE RISK OF A TRAFFIC VIOLATION OR ACCIDENT

LE COMPORTEMENT DE BASE DE L'AUTOMOBILISTE: UN CRITERE INTERMEDIAIRE DE PREDICTIBILITE DU RISQUE D'INFRACTION ET D'ACCIDENT

One of the main objectives of safety research has always been to identify those drivers most at risk so that preventative action can be taken. This article examines to what extent a given set of driving characteristics defining basic driving behaviour can be used to predict the level of 'dangerousness' of a driver, comparing predictions with the results of various other authors. Most researchers agree that age, sex, the criteria of exposure to risk, and social and economic status are the most important factors. The influence of alcohol consumption was also considerable in some groups. Details are given of a pilot-questionnaire study using a sample of 1002 French motorists. Results showed that the seriousness of an accident or the repetition of a violation should be taken into account; it could be that accidents at night are less unpredictable than during the day. The tendency to drive under the influence of alcohol and to exceed the speed limit are preponderant in both 'dangerous driving' and 'illegal driving'. Driving behaviour is a valuable research tool for the assessment of risk and the determination of the nature of a risk. A scale of violations within a points system could be drawn-up so that the greatest penalties were applied to the potentially dangerous violations.
