THE IMPACT OF THE M25 ON UK HAULIERS

The aim of this report is to identify the type and nature of hauliers using the M25 London orbital motorway, and to assess the advantages and disadvantages incurred by using it. The work is based upon replies received from 1500 questionnaires which were distributed throughout the United Kingdom. From these, 208 (13%) replies were suitable for analysis. The results from this survey suggest that the M25 is of most benefit to the South East, and also of strategic importance nationally. In particular the motorway links the industrialized West Midlands to the South East, and to the Continent. From the survey, the M25 is also important to Welsh hauliers, for whom it is a vital link to access wider markets from their peripheral mainland location. Congestion is perceived as the single largest problem, especially at the Dartford tunnel intersection, and between the M1 and M3 motorway junctions. Local traffic using the motorway for short journeys is perceived as a major factor contributing to this. The major findings of the survey are presented: (1) 67% of all hauliers thought that journey times were reduced; (2) 39% recorded fuel and mainenance savings; (3) 39% noted that longer journeys were possible, therby acquiring more business; (4) 46% noted improved journey time reliability; (5) 53% noted greater operational flexibility; and (6) perceived that better service to the customer was provided.
