TRANSVERSELY STIFFENED GIRDER WEBS SUBJECTED TO SHEAR LOADING - PART 1: BEHAVIOUR

This paper uses fully non-linear numerical analysis to examine parametrically the effect of geometrical panel and stiffener properties and initial imperfections on the behaviour of transverse stiffeners in girder web plates subject to shear loading. Particular attention is paid to the way in which the various geometrical parameters affect the deflexion of the stiffener and the peak capacity of the stiffened plate. Variation in material yield stress is also considered. The results demonstrate the way in which panel capacity varies with stiffener size for a full range of geometries, and concludes that stiffener bending rigidity is the major design consideration. The companion paper looks at the results in terms of currently available design models, and it develops a simple model which accurately reproduces the results of the study.(A) See also IRRD abstract No 829060.
