ANALYSIS OF THE AERODYNAMIC FIELD OF VEHICLES BY EXPERIMENTAL WIND-TUNNEL TECHNIQUES

ANALISI DEL CAMPO AERODINAMICO DEI VEICOLI MEDIANTE TECHNICHE SPERIMENTALI IN GALLERIA DEL VENTO

New techniques developed in recent years, especially as part of the Finalised Transport Project, have been very innovative and advanced, and have enabled the aerodynamic field surrounding a vehicle in the wind tunnel to be analysed with great precision and in a relatively short time. Among the techniques, the use of computerised graphics, Kiel probes, multi-hole probes and laser anemometers using fibre optics, and new signal processing techniques figure prominently. The fibre-optics anemometer enables the values of local turbulence to be measured, also the air velocity where it close to zero. These new techniques, some more simple than others, permit the mapping of the air-flow fields around the vehicle and a detailed study of the processes of energy dissipation in the vehicle's wake (and hence the contribution to aerodynamic resistance). Many typical maps are illustrated, and their significance discussed, together with some of the equipment used.
