MEASURES ON A STANDARD BUS TO FACILIATE BOARDING AND ALIGHTING FOR ELDERLY PASSENGERS

The aim of the project is to achieve the best possible boarding and alighting convenience, especially for the elderly and others whose movement is impaired, on a standard bus, with the minimum of alteration in the basic construction of the bus. The project has been carried out in cooperation between Malmoe Transportation Authority, Scania Bussar and Department of Traffic Planning, Lund Inst of Techn. The project concentrates on alterations in the middle door. The vehicle in question is Scania Model CN 112 CR, and it was produced in 1986. The most important measures are the following: At the middle door an extra sliding step was installed, which projected outside the bus when used at a bus stop. Hereby a level step height is achieved between street level and the floor of the bus. New handrails were installed at the doors. The design of the handrails were altered with an inclined rail to hold on to during the entire alighting procedure, and one last vertical rail that would extend beyond the side of the bus. The two seats to the right after entering the bus (intended for elderly or disabled passengers) were rotated 30 degrees. The results of the project indicate that an extra step bridges the otherwise difficult gap between the bus and the sidewalk. It also means that the step onto ground level is always a low one. The results of this project show that the solutions introduced are not optimal but the basic ideas are possible to develop. The project has however clearly shown that it is technically possible to improve the comfort of elderly and disabled people even on standard buses.
