THE INFLUENCE OF SNOW AND ICE ON THE LEVEL OF SERVICE OF VEHICULAR TRAFFIC
VAEGLAGETS INVERKAN PAA BILTRAFIKENS FRAMKOMLIGHET
To a large extent, the behaviour of vehicle drivers can depend on the prevailing road conditions. To examine this, traffic measurements have been performed in different road conditions, respectively dry, snowy or icy surfaces. The investigation was performed in two rather heavily trafficked streets on Hisingen Island, Gothenburg, during the winters 1986 and 1987. The investigation was divided into three parts: 1.Measurement of traffic flows. 2.Measurement of vehicle speeds. 3.Measurement of time headways. The evaluation of the different measurements indicates that the drivers take the road condition into consideration when choosing the time headway to the leading vehicle; at least for headways less than 6 seconds, i.e. one chooses greater headways when driving on snowy or icy roads. The snow and flow measurements were too few to indicate any dependance.
