GALVANIZED STEEL-ADDED COST OR CAPITAL INVESTMENT?

Hot dip galvanized steel tends to have over 7 mils thickness in measurements made at power plants and compares favorably with zinc-rich coatings on a discounted cash flow basis: 21 years, galvanizing cost $120/ton; zinc-rich coating, $760/ton. The discounted cash flow advantage is $116/ton. Quoted costs of zinc-rich coatings tend to err because some operations are not included in estimates. It is calculated that the extra cost of galvanizing over zinc-rich is earning 21% before and 16% after taxes on the customary accounting basis used by utilities. /Author/
