INTELLIGENT VEHICLE-HIGHWAY SYSTEMS: A VISION AND A PLAN
Mobility 2000, a voluntary, informal assembly of individuals from public and private sectors, sponsored conferences in 1989 and 1990 on issues and opportunities for intelligent vehicle-highway systems (IVHS). This article focuses on the work of Mobility 2000 and discusses the following topics: the National IVHS Workshop, Dallas, March 1990; mobility, safety, energy and environmental benefits of IVHS technology; IVHS milestones envisioned for the next ten years; research and development needs; field operational tests to show the public the benefits of IVHS; public-private partnership for IVHS implementation; IVHS program investment requirements; and the next steps or goals developed at the Dallas conference.
