EVALUATION OF PROPOSED BRIDGE FORMULA FOR CONTINUOUS SPANS

In this study, a formula proposed earlier for limiting the weight of trucks is evaluated for its effect on continuous, multiple span bridges designed by the service-load and load-factor design methods. The details of the study are decribed and discussed. The formula works well for three example bridges, but allows overstress in excess of the specified overstress ratio of 1.05 for a fourth bridge. The latter is a relatively light load-factor designed structure, and is overstressed approximately 4% by the HS20 design truck. The study findings are discussed in detail.
