While conventional underpinning or pilings are still the most common construction methods used to strengthen foundations, grouting techniques are offering engineering alteratives. The article describes how jet grouting was used to strengthen the foundation soils in an extensive structural modification project in Kingsport, Tennessee. Jet grouting can be used in almost all soil types, including silts and some clays, is capable of creating very high strengths, and is considered permanent. It is noted that selecting the method for foundation remediation is complicated. The various steps in identifying a suitable method are noted. A checklist to evaluate proposed remediation methods is provided, and include the following factors: technical feasibility; plant impact; schedule; project cost, and contractor experience.
