RC-COUPLED SHEAR WALL STRUCTURES. I: ANALYSIS OF COUPLING BEAMS

The concept is described of the structural behavior of RC coupling beams. A simple mathematical model of the beams at failure is put forward and a method for the ultimate load analysis of reinforced concrete coupling beams is presented. It is noted that this method is consistent with the actual behavior of the beams reported by Paulay (1971). The method is used to analyze the beams tested by Paulay and the results are discussed. It was found that the structural behavior of the reinforced concrete coupling beams of relatively deep sections differs significantly from the conventional double -curvature bending concept used in elastic analysis. In such beams, a shear or diagonal splitting mode of failure is likely to occur at ultimate. These and other study findings are discussed.
