TUNNEL BORING IN THE CITY OF STOCKHOLM. TUNNEL BORING MACHINE PERFORMANCE, PROGNOSIS AND EVALUATION

One of the goals of this research project has been to increase the knowledge of fullface boring in hard rock and thereby improve present time and cost predictions. During the last 20 year period, fullface boring has become a competitive for tunnelling in soft rock. A great deal of experience from these environments exists up till today. Experience from tunnelling in hard crystalline rock is limited. The existing knowledge comes mainly from tunnelling projects in Norway. While planning the saltsjoe sewage tunnel under central Stockholm, about 6.5 km were considered suitable for fullface boring. Hard granites and gneisses are present in the area. With fullface boring projects it is especially important to perform a follow-up of the tunnel boring machine (tbm) performance data since the method is very sensitive to variations in the rock mass. The high initial costs regarding fullface boring increases the demands for an optimum usage of the tbm. Variations in the rock mass affect the results of fullface boring to much higher degree than conventional drilling and blasting. The penetration rate for a tbm thus depends a great deal on the rock type and the tectonics of the rock mass. Usually the average penetration rate varies between 2 to 3 m/h for a tbm with a diameter of 3.5 to 4.5 meters. A thorough investigation of the geology of the site is necessary to be able to compare fullface boring with conventional drilling and blasting.
