The article describes how railroads are continuing to evaluate the advanced train control systems (ATCS) while seeking cost-effective ways to implement them. Some ATCS functions, such as work order reporting and locomotive health, are being developed first, with the data communications network built around the individual functions. In this way railroads are already utilizing certain aspects of ATCS that can work without having the total system. Union Pacific is focusing on 4 distinct functions of the comprehensive set of ATCS applications: work order reporting, locomotive health and performance monitoring, track forces management, and ATCS train control. Use by other rail systems is discussed. Testing and simulation is described. The costs of installation are also discussed.
