A Canadian bus manufacturer is developing a prototype gas-electric hybrid which will be powered with electricity generated on board by a small compressed natural gas engine. The gas engine whose fuel tanks will be roof-mounted, will be connected to a generator constantly charging a a set of batteries which, in turn will provide electricity to traction motors mounted on the vehicle's wheels. The ultimate goal is a 40-foot production transit coach. It is a unique, low-floor bus designed to transport the elderly and handicapped whithout the use of troublesome mechanical lifts.
