ASPHALT TRACKBEDS IDEAL FOR BIG CITY TRANSIT RAIL

With the growth of light rail transit systems around the country steadily increasing, cost effective solutions such as hot-mix asphalt (HMA) trackbeds are eagerly sought. HMA can be either underlaid, serving as a layer of subballast which stabilizes the track, or overlaid, which eliminates the need for ballast adjustment and provides maximum long-term track smoothness. Benefits of HMA include stability, smoothness, speed of construction, a water-proof railbed and reduction of maintenence. Cost-effectiveness has been substantiated in systems in Cleveland, Long Island and Boston, and is being researched in other cities as well.
