ACCIDENT RISK ASSOCIATED WITH DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CAR

Road accident involvement (according to severity of accident) of cars of various design characteristics is studied relative to exposure expressed in 10.8 miles of travel using results of the Queensland Vehicle Mile Survey of 1963/64 and accident analyses of the original police records for the Brisbane metropolitan area. Design characteristics considered are brake horsepower, weight, braking surface area, power-weight ratio, braking surface area to weight ratio, braking surface area to brake horsepower ratio. The effect of the interaction of some other factors relative to the vehicle, e.g., its age and year of manufacture, and some driver attributes (age, sex) with the design characteristics is also examined.
