BRIDGES

This well illustrated book describes the development of bridges from the primitive wooden beam and masonry arch to today's large steel and prestressed concrete structures spanning rivers, valleys and highways. The author, one of Europe's leading structural engineers, gives an account of what he has learned from a lifetime devoted to the design of bridges. His worldwide survey explores the enormous number of design possibilities and suggests the aesthetic criteria that should be used as guidelines in design. Opening chapters focus on design and aesthetics in bridge construction and discuss the influence of alignment and building materials. Other chapters cover particular kinds of structures: old stone bridges, pedestrian bridges, bridges at grade-separated junctions, elevated streets, large beam bridges, large arch and frame bridges, and cable-stayed and suspension bridges.
