SIMPLE MODEL FOR SHEAR CAPACITY OF WEBS

A simple model of the collapse mechanism is described in which the shear capacity is divided into the contribution by the shear in the web and the contribution by the bending of the flanges. It was found that to predict the ultimate load capacity of shear webs in a plate girder, the shear strength of the web and the influence of the bending strength of the flanges can be treated separately. The equations are simple, and they apply to panels of all aspect ratios and give satisfactory results when compared with many tests. These and other study findings are discussed.
