A procedure based on the nonlinear FEM (finite element method) is developed to analyze the consolidation settlement of the embankment foundation at the bridge approach. Plane-strain idealization is used for convenience and appropriateness. The semi-infinite domain used to idealize the bridge-approach foundations is divided into a near field and a far field. The details of the study are described. It was found that the analysis including infinite elements predicts lower settlements and pore pressures than those predicted by finite elements alone. The inifinite elements do not require any artificial flow and displacement boundary conditions to be imposed. Thus they can better represent the actual problem in the analysis. These and other study findings are discussed.
