CONSTITUTIVE MODEL FOR REINFORCED FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS

The paper extends modified compression field theory (MCFT) so that it is more suitable for finite element implementation. The modifications eliminate the need to check that average concrete tensile stresses can be transmitted across the cracks. This is achieved by working strictly in terms of average stresses and strains for both the concrete and the reinforcing steel. Appropriate stress-versus-strain relationships are proposed which take into account the amount, size, distribution, and oreintation of the reinforcing steel. The effect of these modifications is an improvement in the simplicity and generality of MCFT with no loss of accuracy. The proposed constitutive model is implemented into a finite element formulation resulting in a powerful and efficient tool for the analysis of two-dimensional reinforced concrete structural elements.
