A project at the Southwest Regional Transportation Center is described which is performing literature studies and research in an attempt to better understand the demographics and performance of the older driver. Certain changes in human performance with age are being studied. Visual performance changes are mostly predictable. Loss in visual acuity, and focusing ability are noted. In the cognitive area, older drivers require more time to make complex decisions than younger drivers, and develop a need to pace themselves more slowly to accommodate diminished information channel capacities. Research in this area has involved a visual simulator. Another study has focused on the time required to maintain adequate levels of path guidance. The third year of the study project, will focus on human error among older drivers, older persons and use of public transportation, and other topics.
