IMPERVIOUS MEMBRANE REDUCES REFLECTIVE CRACKING AND WATER INFILTRATION

An attempt is made to maintain a rideable surface on a highway over high liquid limit soils, portions of which have been treated with lime. A method to prevent large amounts of water from infiltrating through wide cracks had to be devised; one that would inhibit reflective cracking through through overlays. One product tested was Petromat, a lightweight polymer fabric having a high tensile strength over a range of temperature variations. Installation techniques are described, as are periodic inspection findings. Recommendations are made on the effectiveness of the membrane in reducing water infiltration and reflective cracking.
