FATIGUE STRENGTH OF RIVETED BRIDGE MEMBERS

Among the major concerns of bridge engineers is the fatigue damage that may have accumulated in riveted members and its impact on the safety of riveted structures. The criteria adopted for control of fatigue and fracture in new bridge structures are based upon studies of moderrn welded construction and ongoing laboratory studies on welded members. The paper reviews available data from past experimental studies, reports the results of recent tests of full-sized members, and recommends fatigue strength categories for evaluation of riveted bridge members.
