MECHANISMS OF STRENGTH LOSS IN STIFF CLAYS

A study is reported that examined the mechanisms through which the strength of the slope wash could have been reduced to the residual value over the 14 years of the reservoir's operation. The study involved extensive laboratry tests on undistrubed samples of the slope wash, finite element analyses to determine the seepage and stress conditions in the embankment and its foundation, and slope stability analyses to study the correspondence between foundation strength and the stability of the upstream slope.
