SIMPLIFIED DESIGN FOR VIBRATION SCREENING BY OPEN AND IN-FILLED TRENCHES

This study develops simple design expressions for vibration-isolation systems using rectangular open and in-filled (stiffer material) trenches in homogeneous soils under plane-strain conditions. The influence is also investigated of various parameters such as the frequency, aerial extent of the reduction zone, trench dimensions, trench location, Poisson's ratio of soil, and in-fill material properties such as the wave velocity, density, and damping. The details of the study are described, and the observations made are listed and discussed.
