TWO MOMENTS ESTIMATION OF THE DELAY ON SINGLE-TRACK RAIL LINES WITH SCHEDULED TRAFFIC

Many models exist for the estimation of the delay function for a single-track railroad; these models are based on the assumption that the trains are uniformly distributed over time. This paper extends these models by taking into account scheduled operations. The uncertainty in the actual train departure time is explicitly taken into consideration. The paper is organized in five Sections. In Section 1, the scheduled delay model is formulated as a system of nonlinear equations. The qualitative properties of these equations are analyzed in Section 2. For computational purposes, further assumptions and simplifications are made concerning the model in order to derive two algorithms for solving the simplified models in Section 3. Numerical examples are presented in Section 4, and the conclusions from this research are drawn in Section 5.
