THE ORIGIN OF MINIMUM PASSING SIGHT DISTANCES FOR NO-PASSING ZONES

The paper presents background information required to understand the passing sight distances (PSD) provided in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), and includes some proposed PSDs and their supporting information. The passing model is presented as well as the associated assumptions that form the basis of the current minimum PSDs for operations. Recent and not yet accepted models and thinking regarding the passing maneuver are also discussed. The paper focuses on passing models proposed by Van Valkenburg and Michael and Glennon. The paper also compares the existing and proposed passing models for determining no-passing zones.
