MODEL FOR THE RESPONSE OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS STRENGTHENED BY CONCRETE OVERLAYS

A model was developed to determine the yield and ultimate behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened by concrete overlays. The overlay may be on the compression or tension side (in which case it is reinforced). The behavior at the interface between the overlay and the beam is simulated by a shear spring with a bilinear shear-slip-relationship. The model was evaluated by comparing analytical results with the test data obtained for 14 beams. A reasonably close agreement between the calculated and measured moments and yield displacements was noted. The results of a parametric study showed that thick overlays on the compression side of heavily reinforced beams can increase shear making the bond between the beam and overlay especially critical.
