DEVELOPMENT AND DEMONSTRATION OF IMPROVED ENGINEERING PRODUCTVITY FOR THE DESIGN PHASE OF PRE-CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate and document a system of operational procedures for pre-construction engineering with the emphasis placed on the use of new and improved techniques and equipment. This was accomplished through two demonstration projects, one each in North Carolina and Ohio. Charts were developed which defined the sequence of pre-construction activities for each state. One chart was developed for Location Studies and five charts with interconnections were developed for the Design phase of pre-construction engineering. The five charts for the Design phase were: (1) Roadway Design and Earthwork; (2) Interchange Design; (3) Drainage Design; (4) Structural Design; and (5) Right-of-Way. Each activity within the chart was defined in detail. Tables were included which listed the input and output requirements of each activity as well as the output information that was retained during the design phase. Each of the up-to-date techniques and equipment used in the demonstration projects was completely defined and the benefits derived from each were discussed.
