OLDER DRIVERS. A STUDY OF HEALTH, DRIVING HABITS AND RISK PERCEPTION IN TRAFFIC

AELDRE KOERKORTSHAVARE. EN UNDERSOEKNING AV HAELSOTILLSTAAND, KOERVANOR OCH RISKUPPLEVELSER I TRAFIKEN

A postal survey has been carried out among people with driving licences for cars, 5250 in the 65-84 age group and 1500 in the 35-44 group. It is found that the former make fewer car journeys than the latter. Among the latter group, practically all have access to cars. In the 65-69 group car access is also high while in the oldest group it is 70% for men and 45% for women. In the youngest elderly group, 5% men and 20% women stated they had not driven for 12 months. In the oldest group corresponding figures were 40% and 70%. State of health is not the dominant reason; the most common reason is "too expensive", followed by "no need for a car" and "traffic too difficult". The last reason was given by 50-60% in the 70-84 group. Access to a car is considered important for most old people. Of active old drivers, 85% stated that access to a car becomes more important as one gets older. The important question is naturally whether older drivers stop driving because of ill health or other disabilities when they are no longer fit to do so. The survey provides no clear answer. Of the active drivers only 2% felt their health was bad.
