STUDY OF TWO DIESEL PARTICLE FILTERS - WIRE MESH AND CERAMIC FOAM TYPE

UNDERSOEKNING AV TVAA DIESELPARTIKELFILTER - ETT AV WIREMESH-TYP OCH ETT AV TYPEN KERAMISK FOAM

Investigations were made on two diesel particle filters, a wire mesh type with catalytic coating to lower regeneration temperature, and a ceramic foam type with noble metal and base metal coating. Both were tested on a turbocharged Scania lorry with turbo air cooler. The wire mesh filter was also tested on a diesel bus in town traffic. Both have a good particle filtration effect. Under bus cycle conditions, the wire mesh filter had a 50% effect and the foam filter with low sulphur fuel, 45%. The former also had clear catalytic effect on hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. Both filters reduce polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) emission in particle phase while in gas phase there is some increase. The results of mutagenicity tests do not agree with previous experiences with and without particle filter, nor do they co-vary with PAH emissions, and should therefore be verified by new tests. Both particle filters reduce unburnt fuel and oil per distance driven. Owing to the oxidising effect of catalytic coating in wire mesh filter, there is some increase in the nitrogen dioxide proportion of the nitrogen oxide emission. Coating the foam filter does not produce any increase. Temperature measurements of the exhaust with foam filter showed that supposed regeneration temperature is reached only at maximum engine load.
