ATTORNEY INVOLVEMENT IN AUTO INJURY CLAIMS

This study examines the growing involvement of attorneys in the settlement of various kinds of injury claims that arise from automobile accidents, with the main focus on claims made to auto insurance companies. The findings are based on two countrywide surveys conducted by National Family Opinion, Inc. (NFO). A total of 20,000 households were screened from October 1985 through March 1986 to identify those in which a household member had been involved in an auto accident within the previous three years. Respondents also were asked whether anyone had sustained an injury in the crash and whether or not they had talked with an attorney. Some 8,586 households were identified as having been involved in injury-producing auto accidents between October 1982 and March 1986. NFO surveyed 6,400 of those households in September 1986, seeking detailed information about the auto accidents, injuries, economic losses, sources and amounts of reimbursement, involvement of attorneys, and satisfaction with the attorneys and amounts of reimbursement received. Appendix 1 explains the survey methodology. A copy of the survey questionnaire is provided in Appendix 2.
