This paper contains summary statistics on pedestrian traffic fatalities in the state of Iowa for the five-year period 1986-1990. These statistics are presented by month of year, day of week, time of day, road system, age of victim, and age of driver. A map is included showing fatalities by county. Highlights of Iowa 1986-1990 accidents are as follows: During the five year period, 1986-1990, 173 pedestrians were killed in Iowa. Of these fatalities, 99 (57%) occurred in cities and towns. Of the drivers who struck and killed the pedestrians, 71 (46%) were ages 15-24; only 18 (10%) of the pedestrians were in this age group. A total of 45 fatalities were alcohol-related; 34 of the pedestrians and 11 drivers had been drinking. Of the victims, 35 (20%) were walking, running or standing in traffic at the time of the accident; one was hitch-hiking and one pedestrian was killed while chasing a runaway vehicle. Seventy-six (44%) of the victims were age 55 and older; 42 (24%) were age 75 and older.
