ROUNDABOUTS 3. DISCUSSION OF THE AIM AND SET-UP OF THREE PROJECTS FOR RESEARCH

ROTONDES 3. BESPREKEN VAN DOEL EN OPZET VAN DRIE DEELPROJECTEN TEN BEHOEVE VAN ONDERZOEK

In the report 'Roundabouts 2' a review is given of the available knowledge on roundabout (traffic circle) safety which was obtained from the literature and from an analysis of accident data. It was concluded that this knowledge was not always adequate to answer the policy questions on this area. Therefore four studies were recommended aimed firstly on roundabout safety and secondarily on problems of capacity. Special attention wass given to the safety of cyclists and moped riders because little was known about this. Three of these four studies are elaborated here: (1) comparative studies; (2) before and after studies; and (3) position of cyclists on roundabouts and priority rules for cyclists. The fourth part of the report investigates computer simulations and will be reported later on.
