The Asphalt Institute's Laboratory is involved in a continuous evaluqtion and study of the properties of asphalts. The effort's emphasis is on the physical properties of asphalt cements; with the properties of emulsified aasphalts, asphalt cutbacks and industrial asphalts also being monitored. This publication reports the findings of evaluation study began in 1977. Several reasons prompted the undertaking of this study. The comparison of the properties of currently-produced asphalt cements with the properties of materials produced in the past was one of the study's purposes. A rash of changes in specifications, leading to an unnecessary and costly proliferation of specifications for asphalt cements, was another reason. Finally, it was anticipated that the comprehensive re-evaluation of the physical properties of asphalt cements and the comparison of interrelationships of such properties would provide a better understanding of the behavior of a given material throughout the range of temperature and heating conditions to which the material is exposed during its application and use.
