BEARING CAPACITY OF ANISOTROPIC CLAYS

The bearing capacity of smooth-based strip footings on cohesive soils is analyzed by the method of characteristics using the limiting equilibrium approach. On the basis of the results, an expression is developed for calculating the bearing capacity factor (without recourse to any charts), once the values of the degree of anisottopy and the increase in cohesion with depth are known. The results are compared with values obtained by Reddy and Srinivasan for rough-based footings on similar soils. The proposed formula is also checked with the exact solution obtained from limiting equilibrium analysis. On the basis of this study, it is concluded that the anisotropy and increase in cohesion with depth, of clays considerably affect their bearing capacity, as can be seen from the results of the present analysis. The inclusion of anisotropy and nonhomogeneity of cohesive soils in the bearing capacity analysis is very important and leads to a more realistic value of the bearing capacity factor.
