YIELDING OF SAND IN PLANE STRAIN

Although there is an apparent simularity between the proposed flow rule and that of Schofield and Wroth as well as an expression of Taylor, it is noted that the form of the stress and strain increment terms in these three expressions is different. The formulation proposed by the author for the flow rule in which the forms of the stress and strain increment terms are equivalent (i.e. octahedral spherical and deviatric components adopted for both) representes quantitatively the departure from normality of the material behavior. It is noted that a plastic potential function for sand has been suggested on the basis of the proposed flow rule, and used in developing expressions for the strain hardening behavior of sands. Comments are made on the calculation of values of psi.
