THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF COMMUTING IN GREATER BOSTON
The purpose of this document is to demonstrate the demographic trends of the greater Boston area over the past four decades which underlie the pattern of commuting. The Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Commuter Source Area used as the basis for this analysis is defined and trends in population, housing and employment in the defined area are examined as clues to the forces which underlie commuting patterns. It is hoped that this document will shed light upon the social and economic forces which shape the Boston region, thereby allowing transportation planners as well as land use planners better to examine policies so as to create the best possible and most efficient use of the available land and infrastructure within the constraints of a tight budget.
