PROBABILISTIC ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF A RETAINING WALL

In this closure of the discussion, the author comments on points made with regard to the estimation of earth pressure. It is pointed out that use was made of bias factors to account for uncertainity associated with mathematical models. These factors were considered as random variables. Although the computed probabilities of failure were changed, the effect of these factors on the final design choice was minimal compared to the effects of other parameters. They were subsequently excluded from the final analyses to simplify the presentation. The complete probabilistic design would require the introduction of more random variables. It is also pointed out that the simulation technique was performed for only one case and thus for a singular set of statistical values.
