ABSORPTION OF ASPHALT INTO POROUS AGGREGATES

A literature review was made to determine the current state of knowledge regarding the influence of aggregate properties on absorption, and how absorption can best be determined for practical use; how asphalt properties influence absorption; methods for recovery of nonabsorbed asphalt to ascertain the extent and importance of selective absorption; and methods which can effectively be utilized to minimize the adverse effects of absorption on pavement performance. This report consists of 5 sections which address each of these areas. The findings of the review are summarized. It is noted that additional research is needed to understand the influence of asphalt and aggregate properties on absorption. However, some empirical correlations have been made that may prove useful for correlating field data.
