The purpose of this book is twofold. Its first aim is to describe the Single European Market (1992) and explain the general effects in will have on transport and distribution operations. Its second aim is to provide specific detailed information about the effects of the new legislative measures introduced in connection with the removal of frontiers between member states. Sections are provided on: a) road traffic law in Europe; b) the harmonisation of vehicle weights and dimensions; c) the harmonisation of taxes and duties (including vehicle tax and value added tax (VAT); d) permits, cabotage and tariff controls; e) haulage licencing and professional competitions; f) customs and immigration; g) insurance and the Convention of the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road (CMR); h) international transport agreements; and i) marketing and setting up transport operations in Europe. The book advises the haulier about the steps that should be taken now in readiness for "1992" both in terms of expanding business horizons and defending existing business against competition from other operators and sets out the essential information needed by any UK operator sending his vehicles into Europe from now on.
