THE RELATION BETWEEN TRAFFIC, HEALTH AND COST OF MEDICAL SERVICES - A PILOT STUDY
SAMBANDET MELLAN TRAFIK, OHAELSA OCH SJUKVAARDSKOSTNADER - EN FOERSTUDIE
This pilot study tries to summarise the existing knowledge of the relationship between traffic, health and the cost of medical services. Among the negative effects, caused by the increasing volume of traffic in Stockholm, are the accidents, which are recorded by routine and generate statistic material. Different approaches exist in order to calculate the accident costs. The effects of exhaust emissions are more difficult to estimate. The problem is to establish a relationship between a given dose of emission and a certain response of the affected population. Other effects, such as noise and vibrations, are even harder to connect to ill-health and disease. Evaluation of health effects in terms of money give rise to methodological problems. The further research will concentrate on these and try to estimate the cost of medical services which are caused by traffic.
