REPORT ON THE STATE OF THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

The Australian Automotive Industry Authority is required to report by March 31 each year to the Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce on the state of the automotive industry and its future prospects. This is the fifth report on the state of the automotive industry since the Authority was established in October 1984. The first part of the report discusses key components of the Government's policy for the automotive industry and examines the extent to which the industry has moved toward meeting the objectives of that policy. The second part details the performance of the industry during 1989 and looks ahead to 1990. Most of the data in this report have been gathered from the results of Authority surveys conducted bi-annually for the five Plan producers and annually for thirteen major importers and thirty-five specialist component producers. Where required, the survey data was supplemented by statistics, primarily from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the Australian Customs Service and PAXUS Australia Pty Ltd.
