ALCOHOL AND THE COLLEGE FRESHMAN: "BINGE" DRINKING AND ASSOCIATED PROBLEMS. A REPORT TO THE AAA FOUNDATION FOR TRAFFIC SAFETY
This study was undertaken to learn more about heavy drinking among college students. The aims of the study are: (1) to determine the specific changes in college drinking since the 1977 Wechsler, McFadden study, (2) to determine the types of problems experienced by heavy drinkers, (3) to search for factors which may account for the continuation of this high risk behavior. Seventeen out of twenty-one Massachusetts colleges participated in a survey that included state, private, all-women's, and junior colleges of varied size and location. Data from the junior colleges were omitted from this report. Student subjects were selected by drawing a random sample of 200 names from the roster of freshman enrollees.
