AN INDEX-SCREENING APPROACH TO THE SELECTION OF COMMODITY CANDIDATES FOR REGIONAL WAREHOUSING

Warehousing is a key element in a regional commodity distribution center. A process for the most efficient selection of candidates to use the warehouse facilities is described in this article. The screening process involves three steps. The first one, "demand condition", compares the excess of freight entering a region to that leaving it. The candidates filtering through that stage go to step two, "distance condition", which selects the commodities which can be moved the greatest distance. Step three identifies those candidates left that move in large quantities by rail or truck. The remaining commodities can be used in designing a marketing program. The Index Screening is simple in concept and application and saves in time and cost.
