TRANSPORTATION, LAND USE, AND DEVELOPMENT: KEYS TO MOBILITY

These are remarks made at the ITE's conference, 'Meeting the Transportation Challenges of the 1990s: Land Development, Traffic Congestion, and Traffic Safety,' held March 11-14, 1990 in California. The national transportation policy statement presented by President Bush is discussed. It is pointed out that a key element to finding solutions to the complex transportation problems is by changing the way institutions and local officials view and address mobility. There is a need to educate and influence local decision makers. The traffic congestion and gridlock problems are discussed. It is noted that transportation problems can only be adequately and efficiently addressed if all elements of the community have a hand in contributing to the decision-making process. A variety of innovative strategies implemented by communities to meet the communities' individual needs are noted. Conferences and educational intitiatives by the Urban Mass Transportation Administration are also noted.
