DRIVER FATIGUE
It is noted that truck driver fatigue is causing more heavy truck accidents (30% to $40%) than any other single factor, and that many drivers are pushed too hard under an antiquated set of work laws. Fatigue studies by the Department of Transportation have shown the adverse effects of prolonged driving hours. The falsification of logs by truck drivers is noted. A new 4-year study study by the DOT will reveal more about the mental and physial impacts of extended driving in different aplications. The use of satellites in tracking promotes tighter control by fleet managers. These and other ways of controlling driver hours are discsussed.
