NICKEL ALLOYS PLAY MAJOR ROLE IN CUTTING CONTAINERSHIP LAY-UP TIME

This article describes how a class of six containerships made use of copper-nickel alloys, as well as other nickel containing materials, in order to achieve a high degree of reliability in ship operation, while reducing maintenance requirements. These alloys have been used for the main condenser and refrigeration tubes, for the main condenser and refrigeration waterboxes, for the seawater distiller and auxiliary pipelines, as well as the propeller. The impressive results since these vessels were first put into operation are described, with the problems which did arise.
