NEW SHELL CYLINDER OIL FOR HIGH-OUTPUT LOW-SPEED ENGINES

A new cylinder oil for high-output, low-speed diesel engines has been developed and is described. Reasons for the development of this oil are given, and they include higher operating pressures and higher sulphur content of the fuel oils used, which, after combustion, changes into sulphuric acid. Laboratory trials, utilizing a full-scale low-speed diesel engine, are described, and the test results ascertained that an oil with a higher alkalinity was required to combat the corrosion resulting when using a high sulphur fuel. Results of at sea testing are also discussed.
